Our Work Alignment PrinciplesSeven Principles for an Aligned Work Environment(excerpt from McFletcher's book Work Alignment for Realizing the Promise of Work, Chapter 2: The Meaning of Aligned Work)
Purpose - Work's fixed center. Purpose provides the framework from which work environments form and maintain their identity. Beliefs - Work's guidance system. Purpose is supported by beliefs and Accountability - Work's record. Accountabilities provide the work structure foundation for clarifying expectations, setting boundaries and identifying work-based relationships. Participation - Work's invitation. Acceptance and appreciation of interdependence creates a community of mutual support and diverse offerings for a shared purpose. Service - Work's heart. Work is honorable and dignified Interdependence - Work's community. Work’s invitation offers opportunities to join and participate for achievement of a shared purpose. Value - Work's reward. When value is rendered, all members are enriched. Some questions we offer as a guideline to test if the criteria of the Seven Principles for an Aligned Work Environment are met include:
If the response to the application of these Seven Principles for an Aligned Work Environment turns out to be ‘yes,’ the application of Work Alignment as a criteria for work of lasting value is alive and well. If ‘no,’ we know the work is not good in the sense of a principled work environment, and will fail to be of lasting value for its workforce and the larger societal workplace.
